Chenrezig with companion in Yab-Yum
Chenrezig, also called Khadchheri, is a manifestation of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, who is also known as the six-syllable Lokeshvara. The six syllables OM MANI PADME HUM are considered particularly powerful and are often carved into rock walls or recited by believers. Avalokiteshvara is a symbol of great compassion.
He is depicted with four arms, holding a rosary in his right hand and a fully blossomed lotus in his left hand. His two main hands encircle his consort, who sits on his lap. He holds a jewel symbolizing knowledge with his palms together. His consort holds a skull cup in her left hand and a knife called a kartika in her right hand. Both wear the full adornment of a bodhisattva, the five-pointed crown, earrings and malas. On his head is a small Amitabha Buddha statue. It shows a third eye on its forehead.
OM MANI PADME HUM, which means “Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus”.
Lokeshvara, which means “Lord of the World”.
