Kapala, the skull cup, a symbol of wisdom (Prajna) and knowledge. Its Tibetan name is Thod-Pa.
The ability to break through the duality of Nirvana and Samsara leads to the union of emptiness and blissfulness, which represents the highest expression of enlightenment in Vajrayana Buddhism. Rituals involving the use of Kapalas include advanced tantric meditation to attain a transcendental state of mind, as well as libations to gods and deities to gain their favor.
The Kapala (ritual skull cup) holds deep symbolic meaning in Buddhist and tantric traditions. Although traditionally used for ritual practices, it can also serve as a spiritual decorative piece. On the Buddhist altar, the Kapala is an object symbolizing transformation, offerings, and the dissolution of the ego. It can be filled with offerings such as water, flowers, or other ritual substances, in honor of deities or as part of meditative practice.
