Kapala, the vessel of skull, a symbol of wisdom (Prajna) and knowledge. Its Tibetan name is Thod-Pa.
The ability to transcend the duality of Nirvana and Samsara leads to the union of emptiness and blissfulness, which in Vajrayana Buddhism represents the highest expression of enlightenment. Rituals involving the use of Kapalas include advanced tantric meditation to attain a transcendental state of mind, as well as libations to gods and deities to gain their favor.
The Kapala (ritual skull cup) holds profound symbolic significance in Buddhist and tantric traditions. Although traditionally used in ritual practices, it can also serve as a spiritual decorative piece. On the Buddhist altar, the Kapala is an object symbolizing transformation, offerings, and the dissolution of the ego. It can be filled with offerings such as water, flowers, or other ritual substances, in honor of deities or as part of meditative practice.
