Padmasambhava, the highly revered master of tantric Buddhism, was invited from King Trisong Detsen in the 8th century to Tibet to pass on his comprehensive knowledge of Buddhism. Guru Rinpoche, known for his extraordinary mastery of tantric practices, played a central role in conquering demons and transforming them into protectors of Buddhism (Dharmapalas). In this way, he laid the foundation for the spread and protection of the Buddhist doctrine in Tibet.
Padmasambhava, the Lotus-born, sits in a relaxed posture on a lotus pedestal. His magnificent, regal robe is decorated with fine filigree ornaments, silvered, gilded, and adorned with colored stones. In his right hand, he holds a Vajra, symbolizing his spiritual power, while his left hand rests in his lap holding a Patra (sauce dish) with the nectar of immortality (Amrita). The tantric staff, the Khatvanga, is held by his left arm close to his chest and symbolizes the female consort as the essence of wisdom.
