Bhaisajya Guru Statue, Medicine Buddha

Bhaisajya Guru is known as the Medicine Buddha. He is also called the Healing Buddha.

In Tibet, he can be depicted either as a Buddha or as a Bodhisatwa. As a Buddha, he has the fourth major mark of a Buddha, Ushnisha (a bulge or protuberance in the Buddha's skull, the first major mark of a Buddha), short and curly hair. He wears a monastic robe, sits cross-legged. His left hand, which is in his lap in meditation mudra, holds the medicine bowl, while his right hand, in charity mudra, holds a branch with fruit of myrobalan, a medicinal plant found in tropical countries.

This Bhaisajya Buddha statue is a product of traditional Buddhist art. The figure with a drop-shaped nimbus was cast in copper using the lost wax technique. It is decorated with finely crafted filigree motifs, silver-plated and gold-plated, and set with turquoise, coral and lapis lazuli. Every step in its production is done by hand, from the artistic design to the careful placement of the stones. This gives the statue its beauty and a deep spiritual meaning.
