Green Tara is regarded as a fully enlightened female Buddha. She offers protection from the eight fears and embodies active compassion.
The statue depicts Green Tara seated in lalit asana on a lotus pedestal. Her right hand rests on her knee in the gesture of generosity (varada mudra). The left hand forms the vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching, while holding the stem of the utpala lotus. Two lotus blossoms rise beside her shoulders.
Her robe, the throne and the aureole are adorned with ornamental filigree patterns. Fine wires form spirals, curved elements and floral motifs, complemented by colored stones. The silver- and gold-plated surfaces create subtle contrasts and lend depth to the ornamentation. The filigree is executed with precision and guides the eye across the composition.
Behind the figure rises a large arched aureole with a central opening. Its contour follows a symmetrical, gently curved form that widens toward the base and ascends into a soft point at the top. The throne has a basic shape of an isosceles trapezoid and stands on four legs that curve slightly outward. Between the legs are shield-shaped panels whose silhouettes correspond to the form of the aureole. Together, throne and aureole give the statue an architectural presence.
Tara’s expression is calm and serene. The slight inclination of the head lends the figure an attentive and composed appearance. Her proportions are clear, and the interplay of figure, throne and ornamentation creates a harmonious visual rhythm. The placement of the statue on the square throne together with the arched aureole underscores her quiet, dignified presence within the classical Himalayan iconographic tradition.
Shanta Shakya is an artist from Patan working within the Newar tradition of metal sculpture. Trained in the technique of filigree, he shapes each deity anew, placing particular emphasis on expression, proportion and ornamental structure. His work is marked by dedication and reverence, giving this Tara statue its own distinct expression.
