Bhaisajyaguru is regarded in Buddhist iconography as the Buddha of healing and is known for his twelve vows. This statue depicts him seated frontally on a richly decorated throne. He wears the monastic robe; the feet rest in the lotus posture. The right hand is lowered in varada mudra, holding a branch of the myrobalan plant, while the left hand rests in dhyana mudra and holds the alms bowl. The facial expression is calm and balanced.
The throne is rectangular in form and arranged in several stepped levels. It rests on ball-shaped feet connected by curved, shield-like intermediate elements. Behind the throne rises an almond-shaped aureole made from cut copper sheet, whose flowing outline aligns with the throne to form a harmoniously balanced architectural setting.
The robe, the throne and the aureole are adorned with finely executed filigree work. Set stones in restrained colours accentuate the ornamental surfaces. The robe is entirely covered with filigree: spiralled copper wires, tightly placed fillings and small arched elements combine into a dense floral structure. The rhythmically set stones follow the lines of the garment and articulate the ornamental surface. The gold-finished skin areas form a quiet contrast. The filigree on the throne and the aureole shows a lighter tonality, which highlights the figure and organises the overall arrangement.
The composition is clear and symmetrical. The vertical axis and the finely worked surfaces emphasise the calm and concentrated presence of the figure.
