Padmasambhava Guru Rinpoche
Padmasambhava Guru Rinpoche
Padmasambhava, the highly revered 8th century tantric master, was invited to Tibet by King Trisong Detsen to impart his extensive knowledge of Buddhism. Guru Rinpoche, known for his exceptional mastery of tantric practices, played a central role in conquering demons and transforming them into protectors of Buddhism (Dharmapalas), thereby laying the foundation for the spread and protection of Buddhist teachings in Tibet.
Padmasambhava sits in a relaxed Lalitasana posture on a lotus pedestal. His magnificent, royal robe is decorated with fine filigree ornaments, silver-plated, gold-plated and set with colored stones. In his right hand he holds a vajra, which represents his spiritual power, while his left hand rests in his lap and holds a patra (skull bowl) containing the nectar of immortality (amrita). The tantric staff, the khatvanga, is held by his left arm near his chest and symbolizes the female consort as the essence of wisdom.
