This Temple Stupa is a handcrafted one-of-a-kind piece created in a traditional workshop in the Kathmandu Valley. The sculpture is built from copper, crystal and gilded elements; every stage of the work is carried out entirely by hand and requires many hours of focused execution. Filigree and repoussé techniques, stone inlays and detailed surface work combine to form a multi-layered architectural structure that presents the form of a Stupa in precise artisanal workmanship.
The three-tiered square base features floral repoussé motifs and spiral filigree set with coloured stones. Above it rises a round Stupa form carved from crystal quartz. The lower section of the crystal shows a continuous band of arch-shaped elements. On the dome, four small Buddha votive plaques are placed in the cardinal directions, with a row of lapis lazuli cabochons running behind them. The upper zone is articulated by eight downward-pointing cord elements that terminate in turquoise and coral. On each side of the harmika, stylised lapis lazuli eyes are set in place, and the upper point of the stupa is finished with a small turquoise stone.
Above the Stupa is a gold-plated roof supported by four pillars with leaf motifs arranged around their shafts. The roof is crafted from chased copper sheet and ends at all four corners in dragon-head terminals holding drop-shaped crystals. A further upward-pointing crystal forms the uppermost finial of the structure.
This work is a unique piece that brings together metalwork, stone setting, crystal carving and traditional ornamentation. It can be integrated into a living space, a home altar or a meditation room, and is equally suitable as a standalone piece within an art- or culture-focused collection.
