The Kartika, also called Drigug, is a ritual weapon that holds central significance in Vajrayana Buddhism. This ceremonial knife symbolizes the cutting through of all worldly attachments and limiting notions. It is traditionally wielded by the Dakinis — powerful female deities — as well as by protective Dharmapalas such as Mahakala, Yama, and Yamantaka. The Kartika represents the transformation of negative bindings into liberating wisdom.

This intricately crafted Kartika stands upright on a rectangular pedestal and is accentuated by a bow-shaped background. The blade is topped with a half Vajra, symbolizing indestructible insight. At the center is a clear crystal sphere, with the tip finished by a small teardrop-shaped crystal. The background features a fine filigree mandala composed of eight lotus petals surrounding a circular center.

The copper is decorated with delicate filigree elements in floral or geometric patterns, plated in silver and gold. The knife is set with cabochons made of genuine lapis lazuli, coral, and turquoise. The pedestal and back wall are adorned with colored stones, giving the object a lively character.

This Kartika is a rare collector's piece and a special addition to any Buddhist altar. It combines profound symbolism with traditional craftsmanship from the Himalayan region.
