Vajrasattva, regarded as the Bodhisattva of purification, is shown with his consort in Yab Yum, a form associated with tantric iconography in Himalayan Buddhist art.
Vajrasattva sits in padma asana on a lotus base, his consort seated on his lap in close embrace. He holds the vajra in his right hand and the bell (ghanta) in his left, the traditional pair of attributes in Vajrayana ritual. His consort holds a kartika in her right hand and a skull cup in her left; she is shown with a third eye on her forehead. Both figures wear the five-pointed crown and the full ornaments of a Bodhisattva. His consort is shown adorned only with her ornaments.
The robe and the lotus pedestal are set with filigree work. Fine wires are shaped into spiral forms and filled with small arched elements, creating a dense and coherent surface pattern. Colored stones accentuate the filigree structures, and a single ornamental band of stone settings encircles the lower edge of the lotus base. The precision of the filigree work and the careful setting of the stones underline the high level of craftsmanship.
