Amitabha is one of the five Dhyani Buddhas. He is regarded as the Buddha of Infinite Light.
The statue depicts Amitabha seated in the lotus posture, padma asana, on a rectangular, stepped throne. Both hands rest in the lap in dhyana mudra. Posture and orientation are frontal and symmetrically held. Behind the figure, an aureole is arranged, framing the Buddha and highlighting his significance within the Buddhist worldview.
Robe, throne, and aureole are decorated with filigree. Spirals filled with small curved wire elements form geometric patterns and structure the surfaces. Framed colored stones are integrated into the filigree work and complemented by dzi-beads. The body is set in red; red is the color associated with Amitabha.
The symmetrical arrangement and the balanced ornamentation correspond to traditional Buddhist iconography and lend the statue a sovereign presence.
