Akshobhya Buddha Statue – Buddhist Figure with Filigree
Created in the workshop of Shanta Shakya in Patan, Nepal. One of a kind.
Akshobhya Buddha seated on a lotus pedestal and worked in filigree with set colored stones. He wears the crown and full ornaments of a bodhisattva.
Akshobhya, the Imperturbable, is one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas. In Tibet he is known as Mitrugpa.
The statue depicts Akshobhya Buddha seated in the lotus posture, vajra asana, on a lotus pedestal. His right hand touches the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, while his left hand holds an upright vajra. He wears the crown and the full ornaments of a bodhisattva.
The robe and the pedestal are worked with filigree. Spirals formed from thin metal wires are filled with small arched elements and assembled into a continuous pattern. Colored stones are set into the filigree, forming floral motifs throughout the ornamentation. The decoration runs all around, allowing the statue to be presented freestanding.
The statue follows the image traditions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which ritual identity, gesture, and ornament are brought together into a balanced iconographic unity.
