Question about "Amitabha Buddha Statue – Buddhist Figure with Filigree on Throne"
Created in the workshop of Shanta Shakya in Patan, Nepal. One of a kind.
Amitabha Buddha statue on a stepped throne with aureole, worked in filigree, gilded and silver-plated, set with colored stones, and dzi beads. Amitabha is one of the five Dhyani Buddhas. He is regarded as the Buddha of Infinite Light.
The statue depicts Amitabha seated in the lotus posture, padma asana. Both hands rest in the lap in dhyana mudra. The stepped throne and arched aureole frame the Buddha and emphasize his significance.
Robe, throne, and aureole are worked in filigree. Thin wires are shaped into spirals, filled with small arched elements, and joined into patterns. Colored stones and dzi beads are integrated into the ornamentation. The body is set in red, the color traditionally associated with Amitabha.
The statue follows the image traditions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which ritual identity, gesture, and ornament are brought together into a balanced iconographic unity.
