Chenrezig Yab Yum Statue – Buddhist Figure with Filigree

Chenrezig on a lotus pedestal, in yab yum with his consort. The statue is worked in filigree, gilded and silver-plated, set with colored stones. Chenrezig, Tibetan for Avalokiteshvara, embodies compassion.

Chenrezig is seated in padma asana, his consort facing him on his lap. He is depicted with four arms: the upper right hand holds a mala, the upper left a fully opened lotus, while the central hands are joined behind her back at chest level, holding the cintamani, the wish-fulfilling jewel. His consort has a skull cup in her left hand and a kartika in her right. Both wear the crown and full ornaments of a bodhisattva. A miniature figure of Amitabha Buddha is placed in Chenrezig's hair, while the consort is shown with a third eye on the forehead. She is wearing only her ornaments.

His robe and the pedestal are worked in filigree. Thin wires are shaped into spiral elements and filled with small arched units, joined into an ornamental pattern. Turquoise, coral, and lapis lazuli stones accentuate the filigree. The figure is worked all around and suitable for freestanding presentation.

The sculpture follows iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which posture, gesture, and ornament are brought together in a balanced composition.

Statue made of copper, traditional lost-wax cast, decorated with fine filigree, gold- and silver-plated, set with turquoise, coral, and lapis lazuli stones. The statue is patinated. The faces are set in gold. Handcrafted in Nepal.
