Green Tara Statue – Buddhist Figure with Filigree
Created in the workshop of Shanta Shakya in Patan, Nepal. One of a kind.
Green Tara is revered as a fully enlightened female Buddha and as the protector from the Eight Fears.
She is seated in lalit asana, the slightly open posture with the left leg folded and the right leg extended forward. Her right hand rests in the gesture of granting, varada mudra, while the left hand forms the gesture of teaching, vitarka mudra. Two lotus blossoms carved from blue stone are positioned beside her shoulders.
The face and upper body are carved from crystal and integrated into the metal figure. The crystal body stands in contrast to the metal and gives the figure a deeper, almost floating appearance. Her robe is decorated with filigree: fine wires are bent into spiral forms, filled with small arched elements, and assembled into continuous patterns. Colored stones accentuate the ornament. The statue is worked on all sides and intended for freestanding presentation.
The statue follows the image traditions of Vajrayana Buddhism in the Kathmandu Valley, in which material, gesture, and iconographic form are brought together into a restrained, balanced unity.
