Question about this piece

Created in the workshop of Shanta Shakya in Patan, Nepal. One of a kind.

Shankha on a stand. The conch shell horn is worked in filigree, silver- and gold-plated, with colored stones and carved stone ornaments. The Buddhist conch shell horn is known in Tibetan as dung kar. Its sound symbolizes the Buddha's teaching, and it serves as a ritual instrument throughout the Himalayan region.

The shankha rests on a stand and is presented horizontally above the base. The conch shell is held within a wing-shaped copper mount supported at either end.

The mount is worked in filigree and incorporates a flaming Triratna motif set with carved stones. Thin wires are shaped into spirals, filled with small arched elements, and joined into patterns. Colored stones accentuate the ornament and form floral motifs.

The stand is likewise worked in filigree. Its ornament is arranged symmetrically around a central floral motif. The sides are slightly inclined, creating a roof-like profile, while the four feet curve gently outward at the corners. Worked around on all sides, the object is suitable for freestanding presentation.

The shankha follows the established iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which form, symbolic meaning, and ornament are brought together into a balanced composition.
