Question about this piece

Created in the workshop of Shanta Shakya in Patan, Nepal. One of a kind.

Prajnaparamita on a lotus pedestal. The statue is worked in filigree, gilded and silver-plated, set with colored stones. The goddess embodies the Perfection of Wisdom.

Prajnaparamita is seated in padma asana. She is four-armed. Her two inner hands rest in her lap in dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation. The outer hands hold her attributes: in the left hand the Prajnaparamita, the book of wisdom, and in the right hand a vajra, symbolizing clarity and indestructibility. Prajnaparamita wears the crown and full ornaments of a bodhisattva.

Robe and pedestal are worked in filigree. Thin wire is bent into spirals, filled with small arched elements, and joined in an ornamental pattern. Colored stones are set within the filigree as floral accents. On the reverse of the lotus pedestal, a lotus carved from red stone is placed at the center, flanked by two smaller blossoms. The figure is worked all around and suitable for freestanding presentation.

Prajnaparamita follows established iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which posture, gesture, and ornament are brought together in a balanced composition.

Prajnaparamita
