Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who lived in northern India in the 5th century BCE and founded the Buddhist teaching.
The statue shows Shakyamuni Buddha seated in lotus posture on a double lotus pedestal. His right hand touches the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, while the left hand holds an alms bowl.
The reverse of the pedestal bears an inscription. Below it appears a central iconographic motif: the Dharmachakra, flanked by two deer. This representation refers to the Buddha’s first teaching in the Deer Park of Sarnath and belongs to the established symbols of Buddhist art.
The robe and pedestal are decorated with filigree work. Spirals formed from fine metal wires are filled with small arched elements and combined into a continuous pattern. Integrated into the filigree are cast and partially punched motifs that emerge as raised fields from the ornament. These depict the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism, each surrounded by a ring of small set turquoise stones.
The statue follows the established image traditions of Buddhist art, bringing iconography and craftsmanship into a carefully balanced unity.
