Question about this piece

Created in the workshop of Shanta Shakya in Patan, Nepal. One of a kind.

Shakyamuni Buddha on a double lotus pedestal. The statue is decorated with Eight Auspicious Symbols, gilded and silver-plated, worked in filigree and set colored stones. Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who lived in northern India in the 5th century BCE and founded the Buddhist teaching.

The statue shows Shakyamuni Buddha seated in lotus posture. His right hand touches the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, while the left hand holds an alms bowl.

The reverse of the pedestal bears a mantra. Below it appears as central motif the dharmachakra, flanked by two deer. The representation refers to the Buddha’s first teaching in the Deer Park of Sarnath.

His robe and pedestal are worked in filigree. Spirals formed from thin wires are filled with small arched elements and joined into an ornamental pattern. Integrated into the filigree are cast and punched motifs that emerge as raised fields. These depict the Eight Auspicious Symbols, astamangala, each surrounded by a ring of small set turquoise stones. The figure is worked all around.

The statue follows established iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which posture, gesture, and ornament are brought together in a balanced composition.
