Shakyamuni Buddha Statue – Buddhist Figure with Filigree

Shakyamuni Buddha Statue on a lotus pedestal. The statue is worked in filigree, gildet and silver-platet, set with colored stones. Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who lived in northern India in the 5th century BCE and founded the Buddhist teaching.

The statue shows Shakyamuni Buddha seated in lotus posture, padma asana. His right hand touches the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, while the left hand holds an alms bowl.

The robe and pedestal are decorated with filigree. Spirals formed from thin wires, filled with small arched elements, are combined into a coherent ornamental pattern. Set colored stones are arranged in floral forms and integrated into the filigree. The figure is worked all around and suitable for freestanding presentation.

The statue follows iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which posture, gesture, and ornament are brought together in a balanced composition.
