Shakyamuni Buddha Statue – Buddhist Figure with Filigree

Shakyamuni Buddha on a lotus pedestal, with aureole. The statue is worked in filigree, gilded and silver-plated, set with colored stones. Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who lived in northern India in the 5th century BCE and founded the Buddhist teaching.

The statue shows Shakyamuni Buddha seated in padma asana, lotus posture. His right hand touches the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, while the left hand holds an alms bowl. Behind the figure, a drop-shaped aureole frames the head.

Robe, pedestal, and aureole are worked in filigree. Thin wires are bent into spirals, filled with small arched elements, and assembled into continuous patterns. Colored stones accentuate the ornament. The figure is worked all around and suitable for freestanding presentation.

The statue follows iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which posture, gesture, and ornament are brought together in a balanced composition.

Copper statue, traditional lost-wax cast, decorated with filigree, gold- and silver-plated, set with colored stones. The figure is patinated. The face is set in gold. Handcrafted in Nepal.
