Shakyamuni Buddha Statue – Buddhist Figure

Shakyamuni Buddha on a double lotus pedestal. The statue is fire-gilded, with chiselled ornamentation. Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who lived in northern India in the 5th century BCE and founded the Buddhist teaching.

The statue shows Shakyamuni Buddha seated in lotus posture, padma asana. His right hand touches the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, while the left hand holds an alms bowl.

His robe is chiselled and punched. Spiral-shaped ornaments filled with leaf motifs form a coherent ornamental pattern. The figure is worked all around and suitable for freestanding presentation.

The statue follows iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which posture, gesture, and ornament are brought together in a balanced composition.
