Shakyamuni Buddha Statue – Buddhist Figure

Fire-gilded Shakyamuni Buddha seated on a double lotus pedestal with finely chiselled ornamentation on the robe.

Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who lived in northern India in the 5th century BCE and established the Buddhist teaching.

The statue shows Shakyamuni Buddha seated in lotus posture, padma asana, on a double lotus pedestal. His right hand touches the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, while the left hand holds an alms bowl.

The robe is chiselled and punched. Spiral-shaped ornaments with leaf motifs form the pattern of the garment.

The statue follows the image traditions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which ritual identity, gesture, and ornament are brought together into a balanced iconographic unity.
