Question about "Stupa (Chorten) – Buddhist Ritual Object with Filigree "
Created in the workshop of Shanta Shakya in Patan, Nepal. One of a kind.
Buddhist stupa with stepped base and crystal dome, worked in filigree, silver-plated and with set turquoise, lapis lazuli and coral. The stupa, Tibetan chorten, represents the enlightened mind of the Buddha and the Dharma.
The stupa stands on a square two-tiered base. Above it rises a crystal dome, surmounted by a crystal mast wrapped with fine wire. At the front, a gau contains a silver Buddha votive plaque. Shawl elements, a parasol, and the finial of moon and sun complete the structure. Viewed from above, the sequence of rounded and angular elements creates a mandala-like order.
The base, dome, and shawl elements are worked in filigree. Thin wire is bent into spirals, filled with small arched elements, and joined in an ornamental pattern. Lapis lazuli, turquoise, and coral are set within the filigree for color accents.
The stupa follows established iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which form, symbolic meaning, and ornament are brought together in a balanced composition.
