Stupa (Chorten) – Buddhist Ritual Object with Filigree

Buddhist stupa with stepped base and crystal dome, worked in filigree, silver-plated, and set with colored stones. The stupa, Tibetan chorten, represents the enlightened mind of the Buddha and the Dharma. 

The stupa stands on a square, stepped base, above which rises the rounded dome, anda, with a small gau at the front containing a Buddha votive plaque. This is followed by the square harmika with eyes, flanking scarves, and a circular parasol; the uppermost finial is formed by moon and sun. The sequence of rounded and angular elements forms a mandala-like order when viewed from above.

The copper base and the crystal elements are worked in filigree. Thin wires are shaped into spirals and filled with small arched elements, forming an ornamental pattern. Accents of coral, turquoise, and lapis lazuli are set; recurring vajra motifs structure the stepped levels. The crystal dome rests on a band of set lapis lazuli stones and is finished with arched filigree ornaments.

The stupa follows established iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which form, symbolic meaning, and ornament are brought together in a balanced composition.
