Yangchenma Statue (Sarasvati) – Buddhist and Hindu Figure with Filigree

Yangchenma (Sarasvati) on a lotus pedestal. The statue is worked in filigree, gilded and silver-plated, set with colored stones. Her name means ’the melodious voice’ – she is the eloquent one, goddess of rhetoric, poetry, and music. As patroness of the arts and learning, she is invoked by students, scholars, and artists for clarity of expression and creative inspiration.

Yangchenma is depicted in lalit asana. The left leg is bent, while the right leg is gently extended and rests on a bird. In her hands she holds a bina, a traditional string instrument that symbolizes the harmony of knowledge and creativity. Yangchenma wears the crown and full ornaments of a deity.

Her robe and pedestal are worked in filigree. Thin wire is bent into spirals, filled with small arched elements, and joined in an ornamental pattern. Colored stones accent the filigree with floral motifs. The statue is worked all around and suitable for freestanding presentation.

The statue follows iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which gesture, ornament, and ritual identity are brought together in a balanced composition.
