Yangchenma Statue (Sarasvati) – Buddhist and Hindu Figure with Filigree
Yangchenma, Sarasvati, embodies enlightened wisdom and the flowing river of the Dharma. In iconographic representation, she is associated with clarity of mind, eloquence, and the ordered unfolding of insight.
Yangchenma is depicted in lalita asana: the left leg is bent, while the right leg is gently extended and rests on a bird. She is seated on a lotus pedestal. In her hands she holds a bina, a traditional Indian string instrument that symbolizes the harmony of knowledge, sound, and creativity. Yangchenma wears the crown and the full ornaments of a deity.
The pedestal and garments are decorated with filigree. Fine wires are bent into spiral forms, filled with small arched elements, and assembled into continuous patterns. Colored stones accent the filigree and form floral motifs. The statue is fully worked on the reverse and is intended for freestanding display.
The statue follows the image traditions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which ritual identity, gesture, and ornament are brought together into a balanced iconographic unity.
