Baby Buddha Statue – Buddhist Figure with Filigree

Baby Buddha standing on a double lotus pedestal. The statue is worked in filigree, gold- and silver-plated, with set colored stones. Siddhartha Gautama is the historical Buddha and founder of Buddhist teaching. His given name, ‘Siddhartha,‘ means ‘he who achieves his goal‘ and refers to his exceptional life story.

The statue depicts Siddhartha Gautama as a child. He stands upright in samapada asana, with his weight evenly distributed on both legs. His right arm is raised, the index finger extended. The left arm is lowered, with the hand pointing toward the earth. Behind the head is a circular aureole.

His robe and aureole are worked in filigree. Thin wires are shaped into arched forms and assembled into continuous patterns; colored stones set deliberate accents within the ornamentation. The aureole and the pedestal are each framed by a band of set stones. The statue is worked all around and suitable for freestanding display.

The statue follows established iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which posture, gesture, and ornament are brought together in a balanced composition.
