Baby Buddha Statue – Buddhist Figure with Filigree
Created in the workshop of Shanta Shakya in Patan, Nepal. One of a kind.
Siddhartha Gautama is the historical Buddha and founder of Buddhist teaching. His given name, “Siddhartha,” means “he who achieves his goal” and refers to his exceptional life story.
The statue depicts Siddhartha Gautama as a child. He stands upright in samapada asana, with his weight evenly distributed on both legs, on a double lotus pedestal. His right arm is raised, the index finger extended. The left arm is lowered, with the hand pointing toward the earth. Behind the head is a round aureole.
The robe and aureole are decorated with filigree. Fine wires are shaped into arched forms and assembled into continuous patterns; colored stones set deliberate accents within the ornamentation. The aureole and the pedestal are each framed by a continuous band of set stones. The statue is worked all around and intended for freestanding display.
The statue follows the image traditions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which ritual identity, gesture, and ornament are brought together into a carefully balanced iconographic unity.
