Green Tara Statue – Buddhist Figure with Filigree

Green Tara on a lotus pedestal with aureole. The statue is worked in filigree, gilded and silver-plated, with colored stones. Green Tara is revered as a fully enlightened female Buddha and as a protector from the eight fears. She embodies active compassion and swift, responsive action. In Tibet she is known as Jetsun Dolma.

The statue depicts Green Tara seated in lalit asana, the right leg slightly extended forward as a sign of her readiness to act. Her right hand displays the gesture of generosity, varada mudra. The left hand holds the stem of a lotus and simultaneously forms the gesture of protection and reassurance, abhaya mudra. Two lotus blossoms are positioned beside her shoulders. She wears the crown and full ornaments of a bodhisattva. A drop-shaped aureole is framing her face.

Her robe, the pedestal, and the aureole are worked in filigree. Thin wires are bent into spiral and curved forms, filled with small arched elements, and assembled into an ornamental pattern. Colored stones are set into the filigree. The figure is worked all around and suitable for freestanding presentation.

The statue follows iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which posture, gesture, and ornament are brought together in a balanced composition.
