Green Tara Statue – Filigree Embellished with Aureole, Nepalese Art Tradition
Green Tara is a fully enlightened female Buddha, known for her protection against the eight fears and her embodiment of active compassion.
The statue depicts Green Tara seated on a lotus pedestal in lalit asana, with the right leg slightly extended forward as a sign of her readiness to act. Her right hand displays the gesture of generosity, varada mudra. The left hand holds the stem of a lotus and simultaneously forms the gesture of protection and reassurance, abhaya mudra. Two lotus blossoms are positioned beside her shoulders. She wears the crown and full ornaments of a bodhisattva. A drop-shaped aureole rises behind her head, framing the figure.
Robe, pedestal, and aureole are decorated with filigree. Fine wires are bent into spiral and curved forms, filled with small arched elements, and assembled into continuous patterns. Colored stones accentuate the ornament. The figure is worked all around with filigree.
The statue follows the image traditions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, uniting ritual identity, gesture, and ornament in a carefully balanced iconographic composition.
