Question about this piece

Created in the workshop of Shanta Shakya in Patan, Nepal. One of a kind.

Green Tara on a double lotus pedestal. The statue is worked in filigree, gilded and silver-plated, set with colored stones. Green Tara is revered as a fully enlightened female Buddha and as a protector from the eight fears. She embodies active compassion and swift, responsive action. In Tibet she is known as Jetsun Dolma.

The statue shows Tara seated in lalit asana. Her right leg extends forward and rests on a small lotus platform, indicating her readiness to act. The right hand rests on her knee in the gesture of generosity, varada mudra, with the palm turned slightly outward. The left hand forms the vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching, holding the stem of the utpala lotus.

Over her right shoulder is a fully opened blossom; over her left, a closed bud, symbolising Tara's presence by day and night.

The robe and lotus pedestal are worked in filigree. Spiral and curved elements are shaped from thin wire, filled with small arched elements, and arranged into floral motifs. Colored stones accentuate the ornamentation. The figure is worked around.

The statue follows iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which posture, gesture, and ornament are brought together in a balanced composition.
