Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru) – Buddha with Aureole, Filigree Sculpture

Bhaisajyaguru is regarded in Buddhist iconography as the Buddha of healing. He is known for his twelve vows.

The statue shows Bhaisajyaguru seated frontally on a richly ornamented throne. He wears the monastic robe; his feet rest in the lotus posture. The right hand is lowered in varada mudra and holds the branch of the healing plant myrobalan, while the left hand rests in dhyana mudra in the lap and holds the alms bowl.

The throne is rectangular in structure and arranged in several tiers. It rests on spherical feet connected by curved, shield-shaped intermediate panels. Behind the figure rises an almond-shaped aureole whose flowing contour accompanies the central figure and, together with the throne, forms a closed and balanced composition.

Garment, throne and aureole are adorned with finely worked filigree. Thin copper wires are shaped into spirals and filled with small arched elements; they combine into dense floral patterns. Set stones provide subtle accents of color.

The figure stands within the Vajrayana tradition of the Kathmandu Valley and unites iconographic clarity with exceptionally refined ornamentation into a powerful and cohesive overall presence.
