Question about "Shakyamuni Buddha Statue – Buddhist Figure with Filigree"
Created in the workshop of Shanta Shakya in Patan, Nepal. One of a kind.
Shakyamuni Buddha on a lotus pedestal. The statue is gilded and silver-plated, worked in filigree with carved stone inlay. Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who lived in northern India in the 5th century BCE and founded the Buddhist teaching.
The statue shows Shakyamuni Buddha seated in lotus posture, padma asana. His right hand touches the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, while the left hand holds an alms bowl.
The robe and pedestal are worked in filigree. Spirals formed from thin wires are filled with small arched elements and combined into an ornamental pattern. The robe is framed by a border composed of aligned colored triangles.
Larger stone carvings are integrated into the surface: floral motifs, a conch at the abdomen, a leaf motif on the left shoulder, and a vase on the back. Between these elements, carved lotus blossoms and buds are arranged. On the reverse of the pedestal, a carved vajra is placed at the center, flanked by blossoming lotus motifs. The figure is worked all around and suitable for freestanding presentation.
The statue follows established iconographic conventions of Vajrayana art in the Kathmandu Valley, in which posture, gesture, and ornament are brought together in a balanced composition.
