Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who lived in northern India in the 5th century BCE and founded the Buddhist teaching.
The statue shows Shakyamuni Buddha seated in lotus posture on a double lotus pedestal. His right hand touches the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, while the left hand holds an alms bowl. Posture and gesture follow the traditional depiction of the Buddha in meditative repose.
The robe and pedestal are decorated with filigree work. Spirals formed from fine metal wires are filled with small arched elements and combined into a continuous pattern. The robe is framed by a decorative border composed of aligned colored triangles. Larger stone carvings are integrated into the surface: floral motifs, a conch at the abdomen, a leaf motif on the left shoulder, and a vase on the back. Between these elements, carved lotus blossoms and buds are arranged.
On the reverse of the pedestal, a carved vajra form is placed at the center, flanked by blossoming lotus motifs.
This Shakyamuni Buddha statue stands in the tradition of Buddhist art and is an elaborately executed work from Nepal.
