Shakyamuni Buddha Statue with Aureole
Created in the workshop of Shanta Shakya in Patan, Nepal. One of a kind.
Shakyamuni Buddha seated on a double lotus pedestal with a repoussé aureole set with turquoise stones and finely chiselled ornamentation.
Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who lived in northern India in the 5th century BCE and founded the Buddhist teaching.
The statue shows Shakyamuni Buddha seated in padma asana. His right hand touches the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, while the left hand holds an alms bowl. Posture and gesture follow the established iconographic conventions of Shakyamuni Buddha. Behind the figure rises an Aureole with an inner ring of small set turquoise stones. It is decorated with leaf motifs worked in repoussé.
The robe is chiselled. Spiral-shaped ornaments form the pattern of the garment and show cloud-like motifs. The pedestal is decorated on the reverse with chiselled ornaments. At the center, floral motifs are executed in a symmetrical, mirrored arrangement.
The statue follows the established image traditions of Buddhist art, uniting posture, gesture, and ornament in a balanced and contemplative form.
